Applicants were told about the schemes of scammers upon admission
A new fraud scheme has emerged in Russia, targeting applicants and their parents in the midst of an admissions campaign. This was reported on July 6 in the "Moshelovka" of the Popular Front.
"At the first stage of the admission campaign, scammers create exact copies of the websites of university admissions committees, fake groups on social networks and channels in messengers," Moshelovka said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
It is noted that they allegedly promise guaranteed admission to budgetary or targeted places for an "organizational fee." However, after the official enrollment orders are issued, tactics change. Those who did not pass the competition begin to send messages with an offer to buy a suddenly vacant budget place as part of an allegedly "secret good." After receiving the money, the scammers delete their accounts.
The greatest risk occurs in July, the month of the height and completion of the main campaign for the admission of documents to universities and secondary specialized educational institutions, Moshelovka emphasized. Both school graduates and their parents are at risk.
Moshelovka recalled that there are no paid services for speeding up the verification of documents or buying places on a budget through intermediaries. Admission is regulated exclusively by the official regulations of universities and is reflected in the competition lists on verified websites. Experts recommend carefully checking the address bar of the site, since even the slightest differences from the real domain can give out a fake.
On July 5, Senator Artem Sheikin, Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy at the Federation Council, reported that hackers were sending fake promotional emails where the "unsubscribe" button contains a hidden link. It was noted that when clicking on it, the user is asked to provide personal data, ostensibly to complete the unsubscription.
