- The IAEA announced the verification of the use of uranium supplied by Britain to Ukraine
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) intends to ensure that the uranium supplied by Great Britain to Ukraine is used exclusively for peaceful purposes. This was announced on July 6 by the head of the agency, Rafael Grossi.
"We do not control the fuel supply itself, but after it arrives at the facilities, we check it within the framework of IAEA safeguards to make sure that the material is not redirected to non—civilian purposes," Grossi told RIA Novosti.
He clarified that the IAEA does not participate in commercial transactions, but ensures control over the use of fuel at all nuclear power plants in the world, including Iran. According to him, the agency's actions can sometimes be perceived as excessive persistence, but such measures are mandatory for all countries participating in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Grossi stressed that the main task is to prevent the use of nuclear fuel for military purposes and to ensure transparency of its use for civilian needs. He added that the countries that are parties to the treaty are obliged to accept inspections and not politicize this process.
On June 15, the website of the Office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, reported that the United Kingdom would supply Ukraine with enriched uranium for two years to ensure the stable operation of nuclear power plants, with a total transaction value of $280 million. It was specified that the support will be implemented through the package of the UK Export Finance export credit agency. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 24 that Britain was seeking to score political points by supplying uranium to Ukraine.
