- Fico called the achievement of peace the main condition for Ukraine's accession to the EU
The main condition for Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU) is the settlement of the conflict. This was announced on July 4 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"No one will accept the country's accession to the EU as long as it is involved in the conflict," the TASR news agency quoted the Prime minister as saying.
According to Fico, Kiev should not receive special advantages over the states of the Western Balkans, which have been waiting for membership in the commonwealth for many years.
The head of the Slovak government also pointed out the risks associated with the end of the conflict. He noted that a large number of trained soldiers who have access to weapons but are not provided with work can provoke an increase in organized crime.
The Telegraph newspaper reported on June 24 that many EU member states consider Ukraine's simplified accession to the EU unacceptable due to problems with corruption and the influence of oligarchs. According to the newspaper, despite the fact that the European Commission announced on June 12 the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine's accession, a number of EU states are opposed to granting Kiev any concessions.
