- The political scientist explained the importance of telephone conversations between Putin and Trump
The moment for the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump was ideally chosen, as it took place two days before the NATO summit. This opinion was expressed by political analyst Mark Lowe in an interview with Izvestia on July 5.
According to the expert, Trump's preparations for the upcoming meeting of the alliance are accompanied by a lot of misinformation from European leaders and the "hawkish" position of his closest advisers.
"I think it was beneficial for President Putin to have this phone conversation, because I am sure that President Putin outlined some very tough, irrefutable facts about what is happening in the conflict in Ukraine," Lowe said.
The political scientist stressed that the European side, including the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the High Representative of the European Union (EU) Kaya Kallas, is trying to convince Trump of Kiev's alleged successes. However, the information received from the Russian president will allow him to ask direct questions to the NATO leaders at the summit.
"The NATO leaders will not be able to respond to him. And if they do, they will lie again. So it will be very interesting to see what happens at the NATO summit. But the moment for this conversation was chosen perfectly," the expert concluded.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said earlier that day that Putin and Trump had discussed the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine during a telephone conversation, including taking into account the upcoming participation of the American leader at the NATO summit in Turkey on July 7-8. As Ushakov emphasized, the Trump leader reiterated his readiness to continue contributing to the early settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
