A senior NATO diplomat called the alliance's Secretary General Mark Rutte a "marriage counselor" because he helps smooth out differences with US President Donald Trump. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 3.

"If a conflict situation does happen, then we always have the best family psychologist, Mark Rutte, to sort everything out," the NATO representative is quoted as saying in the publication.

The agency explained that the Middle East conflict has complicated the personal relations of the head of the White House with a number of European leaders of NATO member countries. Special attention is paid to relations with Italian Prime Ministers Giorgia Meloni and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It is assumed that such disagreements may "resurface" at the upcoming summit of the alliance.Газета.Ru ".

On June 24, Rutte supported Trump's position on the need to increase the contribution of NATO countries to collective defense. At the same time, Rutte rejected allegations of insufficient support from European allies. He recalled that European states provided infrastructure and logistical assistance for U.S.-led military operations.
