The doctor named the necessary tests for weight stagnation
Endocrinologist, nutritionist at Ecofamily Clinic Natalia Kovaleva told on Thursday, July 2, what tests a doctor can recommend if a person has removed sweets from the diet, monitors calories, gets enough sleep, drinks enough water and moves a lot, but the weight does not decrease.
According to the doctor, the reason may be hormonal.
Kovaleva told the Mail Health that TSH (thyroid—stimulating hormone) is the most important marker. She clarified that even subnormal TSH values, when its level is above 4-4.5 honey/l, can slow down the basic metabolism by 15-20%. The weight will stand still until you lower your TSH to the target values of 1.5–2.5, even if the thyroid hormone levels themselves remain normal.
The specialist noted that glucose and insulin should be checked. For example, the glucose level may be ideal, but the insulin will be elevated. And high insulin, even with normal sugar, blocks the breakdown of fat. As long as its level remains high, weight loss is impossible, she added.
Kovaleva clarified that it is necessary to take glucose, insulin and calculate the HOMA-IR index. Normally, it should be below 2.7. If the index exceeds 3, then the weight, as a rule, stops decreasing.
The endocrinologist said that with chronically elevated cortisol, the stress hormone and fat reserves, the metabolism is rebuilt so that the body begins to actively store visceral fat; there is an irresistible craving for sweet and salty; muscle tissue is destroyed, and as a result, the number of calories you burn at rest decreases.
Kovaleva said that prolactin is an unobvious cause of weight gain. She explained that the doctor usually prescribes this test if there are concomitant complaints: swelling of the mammary glands, a violation of the cycle in women, decreased libido or puffiness of the face in the morning.
The doctor emphasized that you should not try to diagnose yourself on your own, much less adjust your hormones without a doctor.
On the eve of July 1, Daria Savelyeva, an expert on eating behavior, said that the tendency to gain weight depends not only on the calorie content of the diet and the level of physical activity, but also on the hormonal background. Insulin plays a key role in this process.
Earlier, on June 29, Denis Prokofiev, a general practitioner, warned that uncontrolled intake of dietary supplements could lead to serious liver problems, including toxic hepatitis. 360.ru .
He noted that the main danger lies in the fact that dietary supplements are often taken without the appointment of a specialist and dosage control. This can lead to overdose and damage to liver cells, especially if the supplements are used for a long time or in large quantities, according to the website. kp.ru .
In turn, nutritionist Mariyat Mukhina told NSN that the main recipe for weight loss at any age is a balanced diet, but before any changes it is necessary to consult a doctor.
