Russians were reminded of the traditions of Peter and Fevronia Day

Every year on July 8, Russians celebrate the Day of Peter and Fevronia of Murom, which today unites church customs and secular celebrations. Hieromonk Feodorit (Sergey Senchukov) told Izvestia about the traditions of this day.

"Basically, all the traditions that exist have appeared recently. It used to be a regular [religious] holiday. A service was held in the temples," he said.

Why did the Murom saints become an example for many families

According to him, a few decades ago, July 8 remained a predominantly ecclesiastical date. Now this holiday is celebrated very widely — and not only as a church day, but also as a secular Day of family, love and fidelity. At the same time, the church component remains: on July 8, services in honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom are still held in Orthodox churches. The modern celebration makes it possible to combine the spiritual understanding of the feat of the saints with the popularization of family values.

"Now we know that this is Family Day. The holiday is celebrated very widely, not only as a church holiday, but also as a national holiday," he said.
