Every year on July 8, Russia celebrates the Day of Peter and Fevronia of Murom. The veneration of these Russian saints is based on the example of a marriage in which loyalty and devotion proved stronger than earthly obstacles. Hieromonk Theodoret (Sergey Senchukov) told Izvestia about the important events of the lives of Peter and Fevronia.

Several events of his life became key. The first is that Prince Peter married Fevronia, the daughter of a simple bee hunter (a collector of wild honey), thereby challenging the ideas of the nobility about a worthy match. Secondly, Fevronia followed her husband, not retreating either from the pressure of the boyars, or from exile, or from hardships.

"On the one hand, Peter took a girl from a completely different class, on the other, she did not leave her husband. The marriage takes place in heaven: what the Lord has brought together, a person should not separate. The fact that they stayed together is the most important thing. That is why we especially honor them," the clergyman explained.

According to him, the special closeness of Peter and Fevronia for Russians is explained by several reasons. Firstly, these are Russian saints, and therefore they are closer than even the most revered common Christian images. Secondly, their example shows that the high ideals of marriage do not depend on status and wealth.

"We have many examples, there are more well-known, less well-known ones. But Peter and Fevronia are, of course, the closest to us, because, first of all, they are our saints, Russian saints. <...> On the other hand, it is very important here that they were from different classes, that is, there were no class restrictions for love," Hieromonk Theodoret emphasized.
