Greece says NATO is not ready to accept Ukraine

Greek Prime Minister's National Security Adviser Thanos Dokos told Russian pranksters Vladimir Kuznetsov (Vovan) and Alexey Stolyarov (Lexus) about NATO's unwillingness to discuss Ukraine's full membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.

"I don't see that NATO is ready to discuss full membership. I don't think this will be one of the decisions taken during the summit. To be honest, I think there is a lot of concern about the United States' position towards NATO," Dokos said.

The pranksters called the Greek politician under the guise of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, and the main topic of the conversation was the incident with the discovery of a Ukrainian drone near the Greek island of Lefkada. Dokos stressed that repeating this story could be the "beginning of the end" of support for Kiev, but today Athens continues to support Ukraine in all possible ways.

Another important topic of conversation was the issue of Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU). According to Dokos, this topic is also difficult, since full membership in the association will cause resistance from large EU states. The politician admitted that Ukraine's "conditional" or "special" membership in the bloc has a better chance of success.

In addition, he admitted that Athens intends to continue to develop military-technical cooperation with Kiev, especially in the field of drones, where preparations are underway to conclude an agreement. Dokos added that Greece does not want the conflict to be transferred to its territory or to its waters, and also stressed that this could lead to a serious crisis between the states and the loss of Greek support.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on the same day that Ukraine currently has no prospects of joining the North Atlantic Alliance. According to him, the United States, as well as Germany and other member countries of the organization oppose Ukraine's membership.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 29 that Kiev was stepping up attempts to push NATO into a direct armed conflict with Russia in order to save its desperate situation. According to her, such attempts are classified as "irrational fantasies."

Prior to that, on June 3, Rutte also noted that the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO in practice does not have the unanimous support of all members of the bloc.
