Four family members who held 16 children captive in unsanitary conditions for several years have been arrested in the US state of Ohio. This was reported on July 1 by The Guardian newspaper, citing local authorities.

"Parents and grandparents have been charged. <...> 16 children were rescued from a dilapidated house in rural Ohio after spending most of the last four years locked in one room in "terrible conditions," the publication says.

According to authorities, children between the ages of one and a half and 18 spent most of their time locked in one room, where there was human waste everywhere. It is noted that some of the rescued could not speak.

The children were found during a search warrant as part of another investigation in a dilapidated house in the village of Hamden, located in one of the poorest counties in Ohio, according to the text. Seven children were hospitalized, two of them were taken to trauma centers by helicopter. In addition, one child was in critical condition and was connected to a ventilator.

The parents and two grandmothers have been charged with second—degree felony endangering the life and health of their children. It is emphasized that the case is not related to human trafficking, but is an intra-family situation. All four arrested — Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Kristina Siders and Elizabeth Siders — appeared in court, bail for each is set at $ 300 thousand.

According to investigators, the family has been moving around the southern part of the state for two decades, avoiding the creation of medical records and state archives. The children were not registered at school, and no one outside the family knew of their existence. The authorities are seeking temporary custody of all the rescued minors.
