Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God Day in 2026: date of the holiday

The Orthodox Church annually celebrates on July 9 the Day of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, one of the most revered shrines of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2026, the holiday falls on Thursday. The date is permanent and does not change from year to year.

The celebration was established in memory of the miraculous appearance of the Tikhvin icon at the end of the 14th century and is connected with the centuries-old history of one of the most famous images of the Virgin. On this day, festive divine services are held in many Orthodox churches, believers participate in the liturgy, turn to the Mother of God with prayers and visit places related to the history of the shrine.

The Tikhvin Assumption Monastery in the Leningrad Region, where the original icon is kept, is traditionally considered the main center of the celebration. Thousands of pilgrims from different regions of Russia and abroad come here every year.

The history of the Tikhvin Icon

According to church tradition, the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was painted by the apostle and Evangelist Luke. It is believed that he created several of the first images of the Blessed Virgin Mary during Her earthly life.

The shrine was located in Constantinople for a long time, where it enjoyed special veneration. However, in 1383, several decades before the fall of the Byzantine Empire, the icon disappeared, and then miraculously appeared over the waters of Lake Ladoga. According to church tradition, residents of several settlements saw the image floating above the water until it finally stopped near the Tikhvinka River.

A wooden church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was soon built on the site of the apparition, which was later replaced by a stone cathedral. In the 16th century, by decree of Ivan the Terrible, the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded, which became one of the largest spiritual centers of the Russian state.

During the Great Patriotic War, the Tikhvin Icon found itself outside the Soviet Union. After the occupation of Tikhvin by German troops, she was taken first to Pskov, then to Riga, and after the end of the war she ended up in Germany. Later, the shrine was transported to the United States, where it remained for many decades in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago.

The return of the Tikhvin Icon to its historical homeland has become one of the most significant events in the modern history of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2004, after lengthy negotiations, the image was handed over to Russia and solemnly returned to the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery.

Why is the Tikhvin icon considered miraculous

The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God has been revered as miraculous for many centuries. The basis for this was the numerous testimonies contained in church chronicles, lives and monastic chronicles.

According to legend, the very appearance of the icon was accompanied by miraculous events. Believers told about the unusual radiance that accompanied the image, as well as the fact that the place of his stay was repeatedly changed before the final appearance near Tikhvin.

Of particular importance in church history is an episode of the early 17th century, when during the Russian-Swedish war the Tikhvin Monastery was under siege. According to legend, despite the significant superiority of the enemy, the monastery was saved. Believers associate this with the intercession of the Mother of God through the Tikhvin Icon.

For centuries, pilgrims have reported cases of healing after praying in front of the shrine. Church sources mention evidence of getting rid of serious illnesses, helping with family difficulties, and successfully resolving various life circumstances. Such stories are part of the Orthodox tradition and are perceived by believers as a manifestation of God's help through prayers before the image of the Virgin.

At the same time, the Russian Orthodox Church emphasizes that miracles are performed not by the icon itself as an object, but by the faith of man and by the grace of God. The icon also serves as a shrine in front of which believers turn to prayer.

The significance of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God for Orthodox believers

The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God occupies a special place in the Orthodox spiritual tradition. For millions of believers, she is a symbol of the Mother of God's protection, mercy and hope.

The image belongs to the iconographic type "Hodegetria", which means "Guide book" in Greek. In such icons, the Mother of God holds the Infant Christ in Her arms and points to Him with Her hand, emphasizing that it is Christ who is the way to salvation.

For centuries, the Tikhvin icon has been perceived as one of the heavenly protectresses of the Russian land. They prayed in front of her during periods of wars, epidemics, natural disasters and other severe trials.

Today, the veneration of shrines remains an important part of church life. On the day of the feast, processions are held in many churches, special prayers and akathists dedicated to the Mother of God are read. Many believers try to confess and receive communion on this day.

The Tikhvin Icon is listed in hundreds of Orthodox churches in Russia and other countries. They are also highly revered among the parishioners.

What do they pray for in front of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God?

Orthodox tradition associates the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God primarily with prayers for family, children, and maternal intercession. Before the icon, the faithful ask for a calm pregnancy, a safe birth, the health of newborns and the protection of children. That is why the Tikhvin icon is often called one of the main shrines that parents turn to.

They also pray before the icon for family peace, mutual understanding between spouses, strengthening faith, spiritual support in difficult life circumstances and help in making important decisions.

Many turn to the Mother of God with requests for healing from diseases, consolation in sorrows, relief from anxiety and the preservation of peace in the house. Believers also ask for protection during travel, assistance to military personnel and the preservation of loved ones from various dangers.

The clergy remind us that Orthodox prayer is not considered as a magical way of fulfilling desires. The main importance is a sincere appeal to God and the Mother of God with faith, repentance and hope for His will. That is why the church calls for revered icons to be perceived not as a source of supernatural power, but as sacred images that help people focus on prayer and spiritual life.

Today, the Day of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God remains one of the most significant Orthodox holidays. It reminds believers of the centuries-old history of one of the most revered shrines of the Russian Orthodox Church, the spiritual heritage of the country and the importance of preserving faith, charity and family values.
