China and Kazakhstan wanted to join the Russian Synchrotron Research Center

China and Kazakhstan have applied to join the International Center for Synchrotron, Neutron and Laser Research in Russia. This was announced on June 30 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, at a meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to him, the International Center for Synchrotron, Neutron and Laser Research was created specifically for joint research on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which combines all relevant facilities. The scientist emphasized that the center was created according to international canons, in particular, following the example of CERN.

"Belarus, Uzbekistan, the Republic of Iran, and Tajikistan have joined. And now China has sent [an application]. <...> After several operations, they quickly sent a paper that they were asking to be involved in this case. The reception of the People's Republic of China and Kazakhs is underway," Kovalchuk said.

He added that the Kurchatov Institute also received the facilities of the interdepartmental supercomputing center in Dubna, along with 20,000 km of networks. At the same time, Kovalchuk noted that most of the gigabit channels in Russia are still oriented to the West, so establishing links with the East will be "the next part."

On June 9, Putin discussed with the head of the Ministry of Education and Science, Valery Falkov, the work on a scientific installation — the Siberian Ring Photon Source (SKIF). Falkov specified that 34 buildings and structures with a total area of 87 thousand square meters were built within the framework of the project, including seven research stations where all experiments will take place. He also stressed that in the future their number can be increased to 30.
