The main values of Family Day, Love and Fidelity include selfless love, fidelity, mutual respect and care between spouses and family members, as well as respect for family traditions and the spiritual foundations of marriage. Religious scholar Natalia Fominykh reported this in a conversation with Izvestia.
The holiday Family Day, Love and Fidelity has a religious basis, because July 8 is the memorial day of Saints Peter and Fevronia according to the Orthodox calendar. She explained that, according to legend, the prince and the peasant woman went through trials, maintaining love and loyalty to each other and, according to legend, died on the same day, bequeathing to be buried together.
According to the religious scholar, the idea of perpetuating this story as a symbol of family values originated in Murom, where the relics of saints are kept. In 2008, the initiative was supported by the Foundation for Social and Cultural Initiatives and the holiday was officially established. Later, in 2022, it received state status.
"The basis and main value is selfless and unconditional love. It's about accepting a partner without expectation of benefit and with respect for their characteristics. Among the key values are dedication, honesty and the ability to preserve the union in joy and trials," said the religious scholar.
A special significance in the tradition of the holiday is occupied by the symbol of the daisy, which, according to the Fomins, reflects the purity and sincerity of feelings. She also noted that on this day, believers turn to Saints Peter and Fevronia with prayers for the well-being of the family, strengthening marriage and starting a family, and spouses and loved ones gather together to express gratitude to each other and do good deeds.
