Kazan Mayor re-elected as Head of UCLG-Eurasia

Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, was re-elected to the post of president of the Eurasian regional branch of the world organization United Cities and Local Authorities (UCLG-Eurasia). The relevant decision was made unanimously at the General Assembly of the association in Tangier (Morocco).
The voting took place within the framework of the UCLG World Congress.

90 delegates from Russia and neighboring countries took part in the procedure.

Lydia Novoseltseva, Chairman of the Rostov-on-Don City Duma, Ilya Nozhechkin, Chairman of the Ulyanovsk City Duma, and Firdavs Sharifzoda, head of the Tajik city of Khujand, were elected vice presidents of the division. The organization's membership has also expanded: the city of Talas (Kyrgyzstan) and the Anabar National District of Yakutia have become new members.

Ugur Ibrahim Altay, the mayor of the Turkish city of Konya, and Clara Brugada, the head of Mexico City, claimed the main post of head of the UCLG. The European and North American branches preferred the candidate from Mexico, but Russia managed to consolidate the countries of the Pacific region, Africa, South America, and Asia around itself, so that the representative of Turkey won. Thus, against the background of Russia's disregard in other international organizations, the country's influence remained in the UCLG.

The Russian delegation at the congress was headed by Evgeny Grachev, Deputy Head of the Presidential Department for Internal Policy. In total, the mission included 81 representatives from 54 Russian cities, two regions and two associations.

The UCLG is the largest international organization uniting municipal authorities around the world. The Eurasian Branch, headquartered in Kazan, represents the interests of 122 members from Russia, Mongolia and the CIS countries. At the Tangier site, mayors, regional leaders and chairmen of city councils from seven global offices discuss urban issues and share management practices.
