Family, Love and Fidelity Day: the meaning of the holiday
Family, Love and Fidelity Day is celebrated annually on July 8th. This date is fixed at the state level and is associated with the Orthodox calendar, which commemorates Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom on this day.
Today it is one of the most famous family holidays in Russia. It is aimed at preserving traditional values, strengthening intergenerational ties and supporting families across the country.
The story of the Day of Family, love and fidelity and the legend of Peter and Fevronia
Peter and Fevronia, according to legend, lived in the 13th century in Murom (now the Vladimir region). Their story is described in The Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom by Ermolai-Erasmus. At that time, the city was ruled by Prince Pavel. When he was not at home, the serpent-tempter began to come to his wife, the princess, in the guise of her husband. But the princess managed to recognize the deception and cunningly learned that the monster was waiting for death "from Peter's shoulder, from Agrikov's sword."

Pavel's younger brother, Peter, found this sword and killed the serpent, but after that he became seriously ill. In search of healing, the prince went to the Ryazan land, where he met Fevronia, the daughter of a bee hunter (a collector of wild honey). She agreed to help on the condition that Peter would marry her. The prince agreed, but after receiving healing, he did not keep his word. Then the disease returned, and he was forced to ask Fevronia for help again. Having finally recovered, Peter took the girl as his wife.
After his brother's death, Peter began to rule Murom, but the boyars demanded that he choose another spouse, of more noble origin. Unwilling to break his marriage vow, the prince renounced power and went into exile with his wife. Soon riots broke out in Murom, and residents asked the couple to return. Peter and Fevronia regained the throne and wisely ruled their lands for many years. In their old age, they became monks and died on the same day and hour.
Peter and Fevronia were canonized in 1547 at the Moscow Church Council. They are venerated twice a year: on July 8, the day of their death, and on the last Sunday before September 19, the day of the transfer of the relics.
The secular Day of Family, Love and Fidelity appeared in the 1990s in Murom, where the relics of saints are located. Then the administration proposed to combine the celebration in honor of Saints Peter and Fevronia with the city day. In 2006, about 20,000 signatures were collected in Murom for the establishment of a family holiday in Russia. The Federation Council supported the initiative, and already in 2008, declared the Year of the Family, July 8 was proclaimed the All-Russian Day of Conjugal Love and Family Happiness.
The first official celebrations took place in the same year in Murom, the birthplace of Peter and Fevronia. At the same time, the holiday was named the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, and its symbol was the daisy, a sign of purity, sincerity and hope for a strong relationship.
Over time, the holiday went beyond the borders of Murom and began to be celebrated throughout the country. In 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that gave the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity a state status. The document emphasized that its purpose is to preserve traditional family values and the spiritual and moral education of children and youth.
Traditions of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity in Russia
Over time, a number of stable traditions have been formed related to the day of Family, love and fidelity. They combine both religious and secular elements, complementing each other and forming a holistic celebration practice.
Among the most common customs are family gatherings, honoring the anniversaries of married life. Exhibitions, concerts, festivals and fairs dedicated to family values are held in Murom and other cities. Spouses who have lived together for at least 25 years, "setting an example of the strength of family foundations and raising children as worthy members of society," are awarded the medal "For Love and Fidelity." Solemn services and prayer services for family well-being are held in Orthodox churches.

"Family, Love and Fidelity Day reminds us that family is an important foundation for raising children, shaping their future happy lives, and also that it is important to take care of each other. The basis and main value is selfless and unconditional love," said the religious scholar.
Chamomile as a symbol of Family Day, love and fidelity
The symbol of the holiday is the chamomile, a wildflower that is associated with simplicity, sincerity and purity of feelings. This image is actively used in festive symbols, souvenirs and event decoration.
Chamomile represents purity, innocence and sincerity of feelings between spouses, and also symbolizes modesty and the absence of falsehood in a relationship.
"It is this flower that embodies the purity, innocence, and sincerity of husband and wife's feelings towards each other. And at the same time, a wildflower is modesty. Thus, each other's feelings should not be flaunted, but it is necessary to preserve the purity and sincerity of relationships within the family in relation to each other," noted religious scholar Fominykh.
That is why on the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, it is customary to give daisies, weave wreaths and use their image in festive paraphernalia.
Family, Love and Fidelity Day events in Moscow and St. Petersburg
Major Russian cities annually organize large-scale events dedicated to the holiday. Concerts, festivals, exhibitions and family competitions aimed at a wide audience are held in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Ceremonies are traditionally held in the capital to honor married couples who have lived together for more than 25 years. Commemorative awards are presented, and cultural programs are organized in parks and public spaces. In 2026, the charity festival "City of the Caring" is timed to coincide with the holiday, during which residents and guests of the capital will be able to attend fairs, master classes and musical evenings.
