The WHO reported a decrease in the incidence of hantavirus
The outbreak of hantavirus has stabilized and is nearing completion. This was announced on June 29 by the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"As of June 25, 30 contact persons are still under observation. The total number of cases remains at 13, including three deaths. The situation remains stable, and the outbreak is nearing completion," he said on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Ghebreyesus also said that all those who had been in contact with the sick in South Africa had stopped seeing doctors, and no new cases had been identified. Quarantine and observation period have also been completed in Spain and the Netherlands, including the crew members of the MV Hondius.
The outbreak of hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius became known on May 3. On May 10, the liner arrived at the shores of the Spanish island for evacuation. At least three deaths of passengers from the Andes strain were detected on the ship.
The Minister of Health of the Republic of South Africa, Aaron Motsoaledi, said on May 6 that the strain that killed the passengers of the liner is the only one of 38 of its kind that can be transmitted between humans.
Gebreisus announced on June 18 that almost all passengers and crew members of the MV Hondius cruise ship who were quarantined in the Netherlands after the outbreak of hantavirus can return home. No new deaths or infections have been reported in recent weeks.
