The political scientist explained the split of Poland over Ukraine

Ivan Pyatibratov, a leading analyst at the Center for Political Information, explained how the Ukraine issue split Poland.

In an interview with the Mail News on Friday, June 26, he noted that the dispute over Ukraine has become for Poland not only a foreign policy, but also an internal conflict. According to him, historical memory remains one of the most painful topics for a part of Polish society.

He recalled that earlier, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced his intention to deprive Vladimir Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle after the Ukrainian authorities awarded one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) the name "Heroes of the UPA" (the Ukrainian insurgent Army, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

Pyatibratov noted that Karol Navrotsky does not have his own party structure, but focuses on the right-wing conservative electorate and is close to the Law and Justice party, for which the historical agenda is of particular importance. Navrotsky and Prime Minister Donald Tusk disagree on support for Ukraine, relations with Brussels, and foreign policy. At the same time, he recalled that Poland is a parliamentary republic, so the main decisions are made by the government, and the powers of the president are significantly limited.

According to Ivan Pyatibratov, it is precisely the limited powers of the president that explain the absence of Karol Navrotsky at the conference on the restoration of Ukraine in Gdansk. At the same time, the political scientist believes that the event itself should not be overestimated, but the absence of the president has become a significant political signal.

Pyatibratov noted that Navrotsky's supporters remain a serious political force, but their chances of forming a stable parliamentary majority are still slim. Tusk also has to take into account the public demand for a review of policy towards Ukraine. He noted that Polish farmers are concerned about a possible influx of Ukrainian agricultural products, which could weaken the Prime Minister's position in the future.

Since the end of May and throughout June, discussions have been underway in Poland about stripping Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle. Navrotsky made a positive decision on this issue on June 19. At first, Tusk began to say that he would try to resolve the situation.
