The EU announced the first tranche of €3.2 billion to Ukraine from a loan of €90 billion.

The European Commission (EC) will provide Ukraine with the first tranche of €3.2 billion, which was part of the loan of €90 billion. This was announced on June 25 by the head of the department, Ursula von der Leyen.

"Today we are transferring the first tranche of this loan — €3.2 billion of macro-financial assistance. And in the coming days, we will start paying the first €6 billion euros for the production of drones. This is solidarity in action," she is quoted as saying on the EC website.

Initially, it was assumed that the amount of the first payment to Kiev would be higher — it was expected that Ukraine would receive a one-time allocation of €9.1 billion. According to sources of the Euractiv portal, this amount was supposed to include € 5.9 billion for defense production.

Von der Leyen said that in just four years, the EU has provided Kiev with more than 200 billion euros. It is noted that over the next two years it will gradually give him the promised €90 billion. She clarified that the "prosperous Ukraine of tomorrow" already today "requires large-scale investments from Europe."

According to data published on June 24 by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, this country has received new loans for an additional $45.5 billion from the G7 member countries. This money, as specified, accumulated due to income from Russian assets. Two days earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a law on increasing military spending in the state budget. The relevant decision was related, as explained, to the attraction of large-scale external assistance from the EU.
