The religious scholar named folk signs related to the weather on the Nativity of John the Baptist

The Nativity of John the Baptist, celebrated on July 7, is considered in folk tradition not only as a religious holiday, but also as a day associated with weather observations and agricultural signs. Nikita Pavlov, a researcher at the FNSC RAS and a religious scholar, told Izvestia about this.

According to him, in popular culture, this day has been used by peasants for centuries to assess the future of the summer season and harvest. Observations of the state of the sky, wind, dew and precipitation formed the basis of a complex of signs, which today is of interest primarily as part of traditional culture and folk meteorology.

"Among the most well-known weather signs of this day are the following: rain on the Nativity of John the Baptist was considered a sign of a good grain harvest; clear and hot weather was associated with the expectation of a dry summer; heavy morning dew was perceived as a good sign for the harvest of cucumbers and other garden crops; a starry night promised an abundance of mushrooms; a thunderstorm, on the contrary, was considered unfavorable It was an omen and was associated with possible losses of the nut harvest," said religious scholar Pavlov.

The expert explained that such beliefs reflect the practical experience of an agricultural society for which the state of nature was of vital importance. At the same time, he stressed the need to distinguish between the cultural significance of such signs and their scientific validity. From the point of view of modern science, such observations are valuable as material for studying historical memory, the image of nature and ways of human adaptation to the environment, but they cannot be considered as a reliable weather forecasting tool.

Atmospheric processes are a complex system that depends on many factors, and the relationship of a specific calendar date with future weather conditions has not been statistically confirmed.

"The folk customs associated with this day were formed at the intersection of the Christian tradition and more ancient ideas about natural cycles. Therefore, it is more correct to understand the omens for this day not as "forecasts", but as a kind of cultural archive, which preserves the ideas of past generations about the connection of man with nature," concluded Pavlov.
