The priest listed the traditions associated with the day of Peter and Fevronia

One of the key traditions associated with the commemoration day of Peter and Fevronia of Murom remains participation in festive divine services. On this day, Orthodox Christians attend the service and address the holy spouses as patrons of Christian marriage. Philip Ilyashenko, a priest and vice-rector of St. Tikhon's Orthodox University for the Humanities, told Izvestia on June 24.

The priest stressed that the main purpose of the holiday is to prayerfully remember the saints of Murom and to understand Christian marriage as a union based on fidelity and spiritual closeness.

"A believer, as a rule, attends evening worship on the eve of the holiday, and on the day of the celebration comes to the service, participates in prayer, prepares for communion and confesses," Ilyashenko said.

He noted that many people seek to come to Murom, the birthplace of Saints Peter and Fevronia, on the holiday. It is here that pilgrims and tourists come every year to visit the Holy Trinity Convent and venerate the relics of the blessed spouses.

According to him, July 8 is often perceived as a beautiful date, for example, for marriage. Many people schedule weddings and engagements for this date, and couples and lovers give each other daisies — the main symbols of the celebration. The priest noted that these are secular traditions that appeared together with the formation of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity in 2008.

At the same time, Ilyashenko drew attention to the fact that weddings are not performed in the church on the memorial day of Peter and Fevronia of Murom.

"This is due to the fact that the date falls on the Petrov post. Weddings are not held in the church during this period," he explained.

Speaking about the everyday side of the holiday, the priest noted that there is no strict ban on work and other activities on this day. According to him, the church does not call for a complete abandonment of daily activities — it is important that they do not crowd out spiritual life.
