According to the results of May this year, Volkswagen became the most popular car brand in Europe. At the end of spring, 121.3 thousand cars of this brand were sold, which is 4.8% less than in May last year. This was reported on June 23 by the analytical agency Autostat, citing data from the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA).

Toyota ranks second in terms of sales with 72.2 thousand vehicles (+0.2%). Next were Skoda (71.6 thousand units; -1.5%) and BMW (65.7 thousand units; -1.9%), Renault (61.2 thousand units; 0%) rounded out the top five.

In total, 1.15 million passenger cars were sold in European countries in May, which is 3.6% more than in the same month of 2025. According to experts, the growth has been recorded for the fourth month in a row.

In the first five months of 2026, passenger car sales in Europe amounted to 5.82 million units, which is 4.5% more year-on-year.

As the newspaper Der Spiegel reported on June 16, members of the Volkswagen group's board of directors and its supervisory boards believe that the company's existence is under threat. The survey also showed that all the board members surveyed were in favor of a radical change in the automaker's strategy.
