The ethnographer listed the signs associated with the Nut Savior

On the Walnut Feast, it was believed that as many nuts as you collect, you will receive as much bread next year, and the headman's wife was entrusted with the initiator of the collection. They also consecrated grains, ears of corn and nominal sheaves, which were supposed to bring good luck. Tatiana Zimina, a researcher at the Department of Ethnography of the Russian People at the Russian Ethnographic Museum, told Izvestia about this.

"Various omens and ritual actions were associated with the Nut Savior. In particular, in the Ryazan province, the nut harvest was timed to coincide with this day. Certain ritual acts were also performed there. For example, the most respected woman, usually the wife of the village head, had to go first to get the nuts. All the other women had to collect as many nuts as she had collected. That is, she had to lay a certain foundation," explained Zimina.

Other names of the Walnut Savior — Maly Spas, Saved on canvases and Saved on canvas, arose due to the fact that on this day the fair began, where canvases were sold. It was a landmark event for the villages, which is where the names came from.

"It was estimated how many nuts would be harvested on the third Savior, and this will be the harvest next year. A lot of nuts means a good harvest, and a few nuts mean a poor harvest. In addition to nuts, there were many signs with grains and bread. There was a rite to consecrate the first or last harvested sheaf and bring it home. He was dedicated to Jesus Christ or Saint Nicholas and believed that he would save him from misfortune. Such a sheaf was called a "nominal" one. Ears of corn and grains were also consecrated in churches. There was a saying, "The Third Saved the bread." There is also a well-known saying associated with all three Saviours: "The first Saved man is standing on the water, the second saved man is eating apples, the third saved man is selling canvases on the green mountains," Zimina summed up.
