The State Duma told about a new scheme of fraud with pension savings
Fraudsters pose as employees of the Social Fund and non-governmental pension funds, persuading citizens to transfer pension savings to gain access to money and personal information. Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and federal coordinator of the Digital Russia project of the United Russia party, told about this on June 23.
"The topic of retirement savings has become one of the new social engineering tools that scammers actively use. The attackers pose as employees of the Social Fund, non—governmental pension funds or financial consultants and convince citizens to urgently transfer savings to another fund, allegedly to obtain increased profitability or save money," Nemkin told RIA Novosti.
According to him, such schemes are designed for the gullibility of citizens and lack of awareness about the management of pension savings. Under the pretext of paperwork, attackers can extort personal data, SMS codes, and access to the public services portal, which allows them to conduct illegal operations and use the information they receive for other fraudulent purposes.
The MP called for checking information only through official services and not making hasty decisions about transferring pension savings. He stressed that conscientious employees of government agencies and financial organizations never ask for passwords, confirmation codes and login information over the phone.
Nemkin also noted that increasing financial and digital literacy helps to recognize signs of social engineering and reduces the risk of fraudsters accessing funds and personal data of citizens.
Fraudsters have implemented a two—stage scheme to deceive pensioners, in which they are first represented by employees of the Veterans' Council, and then by law enforcement agencies, it was reported on June 21. It is clarified that at the first stage, the attacker calls an elderly man and informs him about his alleged inclusion in the list of recipients on behalf of the Veterans Council, after which he asks for his passport details.
