- The IOC stripped a Russian runner who moved to Turkey of a medal at the 2012 Olympics.
The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to redistribute medals in the 800 m at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and stripped Ekaterina Gulieva of the award. The relevant information was published on the official website of the organization on June 22.
It is clarified that the changes in the protocol are related to Guliyeva's disqualification. At the London Games, the athlete finished third, but later became the silver medalist after losing the award to Russian Maria Savinova, who initially won the race. Caster Semenya from South Africa retains the gold medal in this discipline.
After the cancellation of the results of the Guliyev medal in the final Olympic race, the distribution was as follows: silver goes to Kenyan Pamela Jelimo, and the bronze award goes to American Alicia Montano. In March 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) disqualified Guliyeva for four years. The decision was made based on data from the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory (LIMS) database. In May 2025, the athlete's appeal against this verdict was rejected.
Guliyeva has been serving a four-year ban since March 2024 based on data from the Moscow laboratory. In 2021, it changed its flag to Turkish. In May 2025, the CAS rejected her appeal, adds "Газета.Ru ".
Last September, American gymnast Jordan Chiles appealed to the Swiss Supreme Court demanding that the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) be overturned, which stripped her of the bronze medal in floor exercise gymnastics at the 2024 Olympic Games.
