Wimbledon champion Vondroushova was disqualified for four years
The 2023 Wimbledon champion and former sixth racket of the world Marketa Vondroushova received a four-year suspension for refusing to take a doping test. This was announced on June 22 by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on its website.
According to the agency, in December 2025, the doping control inspector tried to take an out-of-competition sample from the tennis player at her place of residence, but Vondroushova refused to undergo the procedure.
An independent tribunal reviewed the case and concluded that the explanations provided by the athlete were not sufficient grounds for refusing testing. So, during the hearings, Vondroushova referred to stress, mental health problems and fears for her own safety.
"We understand that the testing process is uncomfortable, and we recognize that this is an additional burden for players whose work already involves a high level of pressure and attention, but it is necessary to protect fair competition," said Karen Moorhouse, CEO of ITIA.
The organization stressed that, in accordance with the anti-doping rules, refusal to take a sample is considered as seriously as a positive doping test. According to Moorhouse, unscheduled testing remains one of the key tools for protecting the purity of sports, and athletes should be ready for inspections at any time and in any place.
Vondroushova's disqualification period will end on June 21, 2030. During her suspension, she is prohibited from competing, coaching, or attending tournaments and events hosted or sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the organizers of Grand Slam tournaments, and national tennis associations.
Vondroushova said in April that the doping test incident occurred on December 3, 2025. An employee of the German anti-doping agency came to her house at night and told her that the ITF was conducting doping control. However, the girl did not want to let him inside, as she did not know the man. According to Vondroushova, the inspector did not ask for her ID and did not show his own. The girl was worried about her safety.
