The victory of the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, in the by-election was the main reason for the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Vasily Egorov, a political scientist, expert on British politics, and author of the Westminster Telegram channel, expressed this opinion on Monday, June 22.

According to the expert, it was Burnham's election to the House of Commons that predetermined the decision of the British prime minister, although there are a number of other reasons. The mayor of Greater Manchester really intended to challenge Starmer and become the new head of government.

"This is the final story that broke Starmer's back. The Cabinet of Ministers opposed him, and everyone has already accepted his resignation," Yegorov explained.

Earlier in the day, Starmer announced during a speech at Downing Street that he would step down as leader of the ruling Labor Party, RT reports. He said that he had informed King Charles III of his decision. In addition, Starmer will instruct the National Executive Committee of the party to organize the procedure for electing a new leader, according to the website. kp.ru .

The British newspaper The Guardian learned on June 22 that work had begun in the Prime minister's office to prepare for a possible transfer of power. Burnham is considered the main candidate for the post of the new leader of the Labor Party and head of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on the same day that Starmer had not proven himself in any way in terms of Russian-British relations, Regnum news agency reports. He also expressed doubt that the situation would change after Starmer. According to Peskov, it is unlikely that anyone in the UK will take a different position on bilateral relations with Moscow.
