The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has published archival documents on the creation of the national militia

On the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, the Russian Defense Ministry published declassified archives on the formation of the national militia. This is evidenced by the documents published on the website on June 22.

"To strengthen the defense of Leningrad, I ask the Headquarters to allow me to form an Army of 100,000 people, mostly workers and students, in Leningrad on a voluntary basis. Volunteers for the army should be recruited from people between the ages of 18 and 35, physically resilient and politically reliable.
The selection of volunteers should be entrusted to the city military commissariat and the City committee of the CPSU(b), having completed it by July 3," the resolution says.

In addition, according to published documents, already in the summer of 1941, the mass creation of divisions and regiments of the people's militia began in major cities of the USSR. They included workers, employees, students, intellectuals, and veterans who were not subject to conscription.

The Ministry of Defense noted that the archival materials "are dedicated to militia soldiers - those who did not wait for orders, but stood up for the Motherland at the call of their hearts" and reflect the high level of patriotism of Soviet citizens.

Izvestia published footage of the Candle of Memory action, which took place on June 21 in Victory Square near the monument to the T-34 tank. The participants of the action, Victory volunteers, lit candles and laid lamps in memory of those who died during the war. The event was attended by young activists who regularly preserve historical memory, conduct lessons of courage and patriotic actions.
