Zakharova advised Meloni to better defend the interests of the Italian people
Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni should better defend the interests of his own country and people, as well as realize how the United States treats its "allies." This was announced on June 19 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
She quoted a statement by an Italian politician who pointed out to US President Donald Trump that Italy "never begs anyone" and does not beg. The Russian diplomat expressed the opinion that Meloni in this case attributed to herself the merits of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
"This was the case under Berlusconi, who really "made Italy great again." In order for this to continue, we must defend the independence of our country, act in accordance with national interests and be able to put "I" after "Italy" rather than "before," Zakharova said in her Telegram channel.
The diplomat stressed that the Italian people, the history and culture of the country are the most reliable allies of the Italian Prime Minister.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a planned visit to the United States on June 19 in protest at the statements of the American leader addressed to Meloni. Trump, in a comment to the Italian TV channel La7, noted that at the G7 summit in France, Meloni persistently asked for a photo with him and, according to him, caused him pity.
