- FT reported on the disagreements of European countries about Ukraine's accession to the EU
Disagreements between the countries of the European Union (EU) on the pace of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU may jeopardize the holding of the summit of European leaders. This was reported on June 18 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
"These disagreements could jeopardize the disruption of the EU leaders' summit, which begins tonight," the publication says.
According to the publication, after the official launch of the negotiation process between the European Union and Ukraine, some member states express concern about the speed of further progress. In particular, a number of States advocate a more cautious approach to opening new negotiation clusters.
According to diplomats, disagreements within the bloc may affect the agenda of the EU summit, which is scheduled to begin in the near future.
On the same day, the Euractiv portal reported that France and the Netherlands had blocked Kiev's accelerated entry into the EU. It was reported that Berlin's proposal for Kiev's associate membership without voting rights remains the most realistic option on the negotiating table.
President of the European Council Antonio Costa said on June 15 that negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU had officially begun. He stated that these discussions were allegedly aimed at resolving the conflict and establishing a "just and lasting" peace.
On the same day, the Euractiv portal pointed out the EU's fear of imposing a specific date for Ukraine's accession. According to the heads of the Member States, this could allegedly happen when signing a possible agreement to resolve the conflict.
