Complete bypass: Kramatorsk-Slavyansk agglomeration began to be taken in a vice

In the DPR, Russian troops began operations to cover the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk agglomeration, the last major fortified area of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Donbass, experts interviewed by Izvestia said. In the south of it, in Konstantinovka, our units continue to eliminate the pockets of resistance of the encircled Ukrainian garrison, clearing about 100 houses. To the north, in Krasny Liman, the assault groups also intensified their advance in urban development. A successful offensive in these areas will make it possible to take the agglomeration in a vice — block, and then destroy the enemy garrisons located there.

Bridgeheads for the assault

Currently, the Russian army is probably forming two bridgeheads for an operation to deeply cover the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk agglomeration. One of them is being created in the area of Konstantinovka, the second — under the Red Estuary. These settlements can become operational bases for the further advance of Russian troops.

The Russian units achieved the greatest success in the Konstantinovsky direction, which is largely due to the earlier start of offensive operations, military expert Vasily Dandykin told Izvestia.

—Units of two enemy brigades are currently surrounded in the city," he explained. — The final loss of this settlement will open the way for our troops to Kramatorsk and further to Slavyansk. Konstantinovka is due to be liberated in the coming weeks, as the enemy currently has no organized resistance there.

Ukrainian militants are hiding in basements or trying to escape from the city in civilian clothes. The remnants of the local garrison are cut off by our drones from the main forces, and they do not have to wait for help, the expert noted.

"The enemy has already realized that the command does not support them, and began to run away," said the company commander of the 1465th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Southern Group of Forces with the call sign Gorets, whose unit is currently fighting in the city.

The soldiers of our assault detachments track down scattered groups of those surrounded and destroy them in rifle battles, he explained.

The promotion in the city is going well. During the day, units of the Southern Group of Forces cleared 96 buildings. More than 70 Ukrainian servicemen, six pickup trucks and over 20 ground-based robotic complexes were destroyed during them, the Russian Defense Ministry said on June 17.

In the Red Estuary, events are also developing rapidly, Vasily Dandykin drew attention. During the day, fighters of the Zapad group of forces captured six enemy strongholds and 61 buildings in the northwestern part of the city.

But the most important thing, the expert noted, was that the planes of our Aerospace Forces cut the last transport artery of the Krasnolimansk garrison of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - they destroyed the crossing over the Seversky Donets River near the settlement of Mayaki.

— This is bad news for the Ukrainian garrison of Krasny Liman, — Vasily Dandykin is sure. — The forces remaining there have lost their normal and uninterrupted supply. They can now only be supported by aerial transport drones, but they will not be able to carry large volumes of cargo.

In his opinion, in the near future, the enemy may have difficulties in providing units with ammunition, medicines and food. In addition, it is becoming more difficult to transfer reserves, evacuate the wounded and conduct rotations.

"Such a situation will seriously affect the morale of the militants — defeatist sentiments will appear and the ability to resist will plummet,— Vasily Dandykin explained.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, up to 20 Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers, a pickup truck, an M777 howitzer and six ground-based robotic complexes were destroyed during the day in the Krasny Estuary area.

Stormtroopers against fortified areas

Before reaching Kramatorsk and Slavyansk directly, Russian troops will have to overcome a well-prepared enemy defense system. Active preparation of these cities for defense began back in 2022, military expert Alexei Leonkov recalled. When our troops came close to Slavyansk from the north during the initial stage of their military operation, the Ukrainian command realized the vulnerability of this area and took measures to prepare it for defensive battles.

—Fortification work was carried out there continuously throughout 2023,— Alexey Leonkov told Izvestia. — Today, these two cities are united into a powerful, deeply echeloned fortified area with a developed system of long-term defensive structures, minefields and prepared firing sectors. It is obvious that the enemy intends to hold this agglomeration for as long as possible.

An extensive network of field fortifications has been created around the cities, minefields and additional defensive lines have been equipped, said Andrey Koshkin, an expert at the Association of Military Political Scientists and head of the Department of Political Science and Sociology at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

Nevertheless, the events of recent days have once again shown that the Russian army is well prepared to break through the strongest defensive lines and is doing so decisively and quickly — it is precisely such actions that should ensure the success of our units in the future. So far, the enemy can't do anything against our assault groups and the attacking tactics they use, the expert believes.

In case of further advance of Russian troops in the Konstantinovsky and Krasnolimansky directions, the position of the Ukrainian group in the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk agglomeration will become noticeably more complicated. Communications of the Ukrainian Armed Forces garrisons in the cities will be cut off — this will create the prerequisites for the successful actions of our army. And it is here that one of the most important stages of the struggle for control over the rest of the region may unfold in the near future.
