New clothes and bed linen can pose a hidden health threat if used without pre-washing. Chemicals that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and other undesirable effects often remain on the fabric after production. This was reported to Izvestia by Roskachestvo on June 20.

"Laboratory studies confirm that the fibers may contain formaldehyde, which is part of paints, petroleum-based compounds for processing synthetics, as well as residues of pesticides used in cotton cultivation," the experts said.

During Roskachestvo's tests, formaldehyde was found in one of the bedding samples. However, repeated analysis showed that after the first wash, the dangerous compound is completely washed out. At the same time, the manufacturer has placed a recommendation on the packaging in advance to wash the product before use.

The risks are not only related to production. According to experts, clothing and textiles are capable of absorbing pollutants during transportation. Due to leaky packaging, exhaust gases and other particles from the environment can settle on the fabrics.

In addition, before reaching the buyer, the item goes through many stages of storage and contact with people. Textiles are stored in warehouses, transported, and end up in sales halls and fitting rooms, where dozens of customers can touch them. Therefore, dust, microorganisms and various contaminants accumulate on the surface of the fabric.

Experts recommend washing new clothes, bed linen and other textiles before first use. This allows you to remove not only household pollutants, but also chemical residues that, if exposed for a long time, can negatively affect the body, including the endocrine system and general health.

Olga Ulankina, Candidate of Medical Sciences, expert doctor at the Hemotest laboratory, reported on April 16 that school clothes may contain toxic substances that can accumulate in a child's body and cause malfunctions of internal organs. According to her, phenols are toxic compounds used in the production of synthetic fabrics, dyes and adhesives. With prolonged skin contact, they are able to enter the body, exerting stress on the liver and kidneys, as well as destroying the protective barrier of the skin.
