Bay towns: 20 regions of Russia faced with rain floods
Five regions of the country faced a high risk of flooding, and in two dozen more, the effects of bad weather have already manifested themselves in the form of severe rain floods. The authorities of the Tomsk region have warned about the threat to several settlements. According to the Hydrometeorological Center, a dangerous situation may arise in Ingushetia, Chechnya, North Ossetia and the Kamchatka Territory. At the same time, heavy rains will continue for at least a week. How the regions cope with the consequences of bad weather is in the Izvestia article.
Who is at risk of flooding
The situation is difficult in different parts of the country. The Hydrometeorological Center of the Russian Federation notes the rise of water in the rivers of several regions at once — from Siberia and the Far East to the south of Russia. Among the territories where dangerous phenomena are recorded are Astrakhan, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk regions, as well as Komi, Tyva, Yakutia, Krasnodar and Kamchatka Territories and other regions.
According to forecasts, in the Urals, the rains will intensify on June 17th. At the same time, heavy rains with thunderstorms and hail will take place in the Sverdlovsk region. The same weather will be in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug and the Tyumen Region. The southern cyclone will bring heavy rains to the Amur region.
According to the experts of the Hydrometeorological Center, Ingushetia, Chechnya and North Ossetia are in the high—risk zone.: The water level in the rivers there may reach critical levels in the coming days. An additional threat will be created by thunderstorms, which, according to hydrologists, will take place on June 18 and 19 in these regions, as well as in Dagestan. Dangerous water levels have already been recorded in the Tomsk region. In the Kamchatka Territory, the situation remains unfavorable, but has not yet reached a critical level, experts say.
Effects of the rains
In the Krasnodar Territory, preparations have begun for the evacuation of residents of the Urma farm and the village of Gvardeysky due to the threat of flooding. Water from the breached dam in the area of the Zapadny farm continues to flow to agricultural lands and approach populated areas. Earthworks have been carried out to protect settlements, and water continues to be pumped out with powerful pumps," the local administration said.
According to official data, 5.3 thousand hectares of agricultural land have already been flooded — the death of crops was recorded at about 4.7 thousand hectares. Winter wheat suffered the most. In addition, the Zapadny farm and the Yodnik farm were flooded.
The authorities have introduced an emergency regime throughout the Crimean region. Currently, 32 household plots and three garden houses remain flooded there, and traffic is restricted in two districts.
In the Sverdlovsk region, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, since the beginning of the week, water has damaged four bridges and a section of highway. Because of this, transport links with four settlements were disrupted.
If the water level in the Tomsk region continues to rise, flooding of adjacent territories in the settlements of Alexandrovskoye, Novonikolskoye and Svetly Protoka is possible in the coming days, the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations predicted.
— Not only houses, but also farmlands and reservoirs will be under threat. There may be problems with drinking water," explained Mikhail Bolgov, a hydrologist at the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a specialist in floods and the use of water resources.
— Unfortunately, this problem is currently being observed throughout the country. Wells are flooding, and people have nothing left to drink. The water becomes dirty, and the risk of infection increases," the expert added.
He also stressed that areas with dense residential buildings near reservoirs are at special risk.
It is difficult to accurately predict the completion dates of floods now due to the unpredictable nature of precipitation, explained Sergey Bednaruk, director of the Center for the Russian Register of Hydraulic Structures and the State Water Cadastre. According to him, the further development of the situation will depend on the amount of rain and its intensity in the coming days.
How long will the downpours last
The dangerous weather situation in a number of regions will continue until the end of the week: rains will continue until Friday, the Hydrometeorological Center reported. The north-west of Russia, including Moscow, has been under the influence of the North Atlantic cyclone since June 15. Heavy rainfall has already affected the Kaliningrad region, Komi and Karelia, and in the coming days heavy rains will intensify in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions. Thunderstorms are also expected in some areas of the Murmansk region. Despite this, hydrologists do not expect serious consequences from the cyclone, Yuri Varakin noted.
— By Sunday, the cyclone will start moving east. Precipitation will stop, and the air will warm up to +25 degrees," he said.
Closer to Friday, dry weather will set in the Volgograd, Astrakhan regions, Kalmykia and Stavropol Territory, experts say.
