In Russia, 12.7 thousand occurred. Traffic accidents with dead and injured in five months

In the five months of 2026, 12.7 thousand road accidents occurred in Russia, in which 623 people were killed and 16.3 thousand road users were injured. Intersections from January to May accounted for 30% of all accidents involving victims. Oleg Ponarin, Deputy head of the Main Directorate for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, Major General of Police, told the Izvestia press center on June 16.

According to Ponarin, the "Safety Promotion" campaign, dedicated to safety at intersections and organized by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Russian Interior Ministry, is being launched in 20 regions of the Russian Federation. The campaign is being held as part of the federal project "Road Safety" and the national project "Infrastructure for Life," with each event targeting a wide audience of different ages.

"The focus of the campaign is on creating a culture of compliance with traffic regulations on this difficult section of the road. The goal is to urge road users to be extremely vigilant at intersections and mutual respect," Ponariin said.

Thus, during the implementation of the campaign during the summer and early autumn, events in online and offline formats will be held in 40 regions of the country, where the largest number of accidents at intersections occurred by the end of 2025. There will also be an All-Russian video content contest "Crossroads of Knowledge" among teenagers from 14 to 18 years old (9th-11th grade students), which will begin on September 1 and end in November.

"We strive to prevent accidents rather than eliminate their consequences. Saving the lives and health of citizens and reducing the number of people killed on the roads is a strategic task for us," Ponariin stressed.

According to the State Traffic Inspectorate, by the end of 2025, the number of accidents in which people were killed and injured decreased by 2.5% (128.8 thousand), the number of deaths in them — by 3.2% (13.9 thousand), and the number of injured — by 3% (159.9 thousand).

The death rate in road accidents is planned to be reduced by one and a half times by 2030.

On June 15, the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Russian Interior Ministry told Izvestia that 1,005 road accidents had been recorded on Russian roads over the past three holidays and weekends (June 12-14), resulting in 102 deaths and 1,251 injuries.
