The State Duma pointed to an artificial shortage of seats on trains due to resellers

The massive purchase of railway tickets for subsequent resale at inflated prices leads to an artificial shortage of seats on trains and forces citizens to overpay. This was announced on June 14 by Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.

"There are reports that cases of mass purchase of railway tickets for the purpose of further resale at an inflated price have become more frequent. All this leads to an artificial shortage of seats on trains, and also creates a situation where people are forced to overpay," he wrote on the Maks messenger.

According to Volodin, resellers most often sell tickets through online ad platforms, receiving from 1.5 thousand to 3 thousand rubles per ticket for their services. He noted that the problem becomes especially urgent during the summer holidays.

The Chairman of the State Duma said that, according to Russian Railways, in 2024, about 2 thousand cases of e-ticket purchases by people who did not plan to travel were identified. In addition, more than 7 thousand tickets worth almost 23 million rubles were returned for free sale after the identification of unscrupulous users.

On June 9, the State Duma adopted a bill on administrative responsibility for the illegal sale of electronic tickets for long-distance trains. The measure is directed against persons who are not carriers, their representatives, and at the same time do not have an agreement with the carrier's company to sell tickets. Fines for citizens will amount to 10 thousand rubles, for sole proprietors and legal entities — from 400 thousand rubles to 500 thousand rubles.
