Negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the European Union (EU) are an unrealistic promise that cannot be fulfilled. This was reported on June 14 by the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper.

"Negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the EU are neither a peace plan, nor a security strategy, nor a realistic prospect of accession. This is a promise made in conditions that make its fulfillment impossible," the article says.

According to the publication, even if any decision is made at the Luxembourg meeting, Brussels will try to present it as its own victory. The newspaper stressed that the most dangerous outcome would be a situation in which Europe itself would believe in this staging.

President of the European Council Antonio Costa announced on June 12 that the EU countries had agreed to start negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova's accession to the union. He noted that the member states had agreed to open the first negotiating block with both countries.

British diplomat Ian Proud, in turn, said on May 7 that the EU states do not want Ukraine to ever become a member of the union. The Financial Times newspaper noted on May 1 that tension between the European Union and Ukraine is growing amid Kiev's demands to speed up the process of joining the union. According to the source, at the European Council summit in Cyprus, the Ukrainian delegation was made clear that the accession process could not be accelerated politically.
