- MTS will invest 1 billion rubles in upgrading the core of the broadband network
In 2026-2027, MTS will invest 1 billion rubles in a project to modernize and expand the core of the fixed Internet transport network. A significant part of these funds will be used to install MTS's own BRAS/BNG service routers, which will replace equipment from foreign manufacturers, the company explained.
MTS plans to install its own service routers in 26 regions by the end of 2027. Among other things, we are talking about a batch of devices on the network of the MGTS infrastructure operator, a subsidiary of MTS.
"Against the background of the constant growth of Internet traffic and the gradual decommissioning of foreign equipment, we decided to scale up the project - in 2026 and 2027, our service routers will be installed in 26 more regions," said Viktor Perov, Director of the Department of Regional Transport and Corporate Customer Networks at MTS.
After the departure of the main vendors of network equipment from Russia — Cisco, Juniper and Huawei — MTS independently created its own solution at the end of 2024 — service routers in the form of software that is installed on widespread x86 architecture servers. Depending on the server configuration, the software provides router bandwidth from 40 to 200 Gbps.
BRAS (Broadband Remote Access Server) or BNG (Broadband Network Gateway) service boundary equipment is a device or software element operating at the junction of a backbone network and a broadband fixed access network. The solution installed on the core of the telecom operator's network aggregates user connections: routes traffic to the backbone network, authorizes and logs client sessions, assigns IP addresses, and applies quality policies.
At the beginning of 2025, the company received a certificate of conformity in the field of communications for its MTS-BNG service router and has now put into operation the first sets of equipment in 22 regions of Russia.
