Modern methods of antirheumatic therapy can significantly slow down or completely stop the destruction of bone tissue. This was reported by Medical Xpress magazine on June 10.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation and seriously increases the risk of osteoporosis. According to the meta-analysis, patients with this diagnosis suffer from fractures 50% more often than other people, and the risk of hip fracture in some cases increases by more than two times.

Professor at the University of Amsterdam and co-chairman of the Osteocommunology working group of the International Osteoporosis Foundation Willem F. Leems noted that modern treatment methods can significantly slow down or even stop both local erosion and overall bone loss in patients.

The researchers highlighted the role of innovative diagnostic methods, including high-resolution computed tomography, which makes it possible to detect bone destruction at an early stage.

We are pleased to see that significant advances in osteoimmunology, combined with the introduction of highly effective biological treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, can significantly prevent both local and generalized bone loss in rheumatoid arthritis. These achievements show that advances in immunology and targeted therapy are changing the long-term prognosis for patients, shifting treatment goals from controlling symptoms to maintaining skeletal health and preventing disability.

Despite the progress made, the authors point to the need for further research. In particular, specialists will have to study the quality of bone tissue in more detail and develop strategies to reduce the residual risk of fractures, even in cases where the inflammatory process is under the control of doctors.

On May 28, Medical Xpress reported on the association of depression with rheumatoid arthritis. According to the study, pain and depression reduce physical activity and contribute to a deterioration in sleep quality, which, in turn, increases pain. Such a "vicious circle", according to scientists, does not give patients the opportunity to go into remission.
