The Transfiguration of the Lord is one of the non-recurring holidays, so every year it is celebrated on the same date. In the Russian Orthodox Church, it is celebrated annually on August 19. In 2026, the celebration falls on a Wednesday.
The celebration always falls during the Dormition Fast, which lasts from August 14 to August 27. This gives the day a special depth, but it also requires believers to strictly abstain from food and actions.

As the dean of the Baltai district of the Saratov diocese, Priest Oleg Zhilyakov, explained to Izvestia, the meaning of this event was that it was supposed to strengthen the disciples before future trials, and also to show that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah.
— Christ revealed His divine nature to His disciples. The apostles saw that before them was not only a man, but also the Son of God. They experienced true joy and rejoicing and did not want to leave, feeling that here, on Mount Tabor, there is already the joy of the Kingdom of God. They said: "Mentor, it's good for us to be here. We will make three tabernacles (tents. — Ed.): one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah." And this experience became an important support for them throughout their later life and preaching," said the priest.
At the same time, the priest notes that the meaning of the holiday is not limited only to the memory of the miracle on Mount Tabor. It's about inner change, purification, and striving for God — that is, the spiritual path to which every believer is called.
— On the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, we celebrate not only the triumph of the transfiguration of the Lord, but also the transfiguration of man himself, who has the image of God in him. This is not just a historical event, but an indication of the path for each of us," he stressed.
What happened on Mount Tabor according to the Gospel
The transfiguration is described in detail in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. According to the narrative, Jesus Christ ascended Mount Tabor together with three of his closest disciples — Peter, James and John. A miracle happened there, which became a revelation of His Divine nature.

It has become a part of our culture, but it does not reflect the full depth of the theological meaning of the holiday," explained Oleg Zhilyakov.
The priest added that the tradition of consecrating fruits has ancient roots. It dates back to the Old Testament times, when people brought the first fruits of the harvest to God.
— In the Jewish tradition, it was the custom to bring and consecrate the first fruits. It is at this time that apples, honey, and nuts ripen. People brought them to the temple, consecrated them and thanked the Lord. Because without God, nothing happens in this world," said the priest.
However, the priest stressed that the consecration of apples is not the most important thing. The meaning of the holiday is much deeper. It is connected not with fruits, but with the spiritual life of a person, with his inner transformation and striving for God.
The main traditions of the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord
On the holiday, believers try to come to the temple, pray and, if possible, receive communion. On this day, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in churches, which ends with a procession and a special prayer for the consecration of the first fruits. Believers bring baskets with apples, as well as pears, grapes and other seasonal fruits.
Preparations for the holiday begin the day before. An all-night vigil is being held on the evening of August 18. A distinctive feature of the service is the robes of the clergy. Unity is especially important on this day, because the closer we are to each other, the closer we are to the Lord. Through love for one's neighbor, a person transforms himself," the priest noted.
What can and cannot be done on this day
On the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, it is important first of all to maintain inner peace: to spend the day without quarrels, irritation and unnecessary fuss, at peace with oneself and others. On this day, believers often gather at the family table, cook dishes with apples, treat each other. It is considered a good deed to share the fruits of a new harvest with loved ones, neighbors, or those who need help.
The Church does not impose strict household prohibitions. They are allowed to do daily chores if they are really necessary: work, perform household chores, and help loved ones.
At the same time, Priest Oleg Zhilyakov draws attention to the fact that the holiday is often perceived through the prism of prohibitions and folk customs. For example, it is widely believed that you cannot eat new-harvest apples before Apple Day, or that work is completely prohibited on the holiday itself. However, such ideas, according to him, do not belong to the church tradition.
— If a person visits a church, prays, and spends time on the spiritual side of the holiday, they can safely continue to do the necessary things. The restrictions only apply to hustle and bustle and optional activities, not to the work itself. But the main thing to remember is that the Transfiguration of the Lord is not just a date on the calendar, but an opportunity to stop, rethink your life, and become a better person," he said.
