Nature has reported the discovery of the largest whale cemetery in the Indian Ocean

Chinese scientists have discovered a large deep-sea whale graveyard off the southwestern coast of Australia, where carcasses of various marine animals have been trapped for at least 5.3 million years. It contains almost 500 whale skeletons and stretches for 1.2 thousand km. This became known on June 10 from a study published in the journal Nature.

"In this paper, we report the discovery of an extensive whale necropolis in the Diamantina zone at a depth of 4,616 to 7,001 m, extending for about 1.2 thousand kilometers along the seabed in the southeastern Indian Ocean. A deep and extensive accumulation of remains has been discovered in this area, including five modern natural communities formed as a result of the fall of whales, and 476 recorded fossil cetaceans," the study says.
