The most expensive items of expenses during travel are named

The main item of travel expenses for most Russians remains accommodation. It was named the most expensive item by 68% of the study participants. This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by the Ozon Travel service and Renaissance Insurance Group, which was reviewed by Izvestia on June 15.

In addition to accommodation, Russians traditionally spend a significant part of their vacation budget on food and travel. 53% and 49% of respondents noted these items of expenses, respectively. Another 29% of the survey participants reported that significant amounts are spent on excursions and entertainment, and 11% put significant expenses on shopping and buying souvenirs.

At the same time, travelers often face additional costs that were not foreseen in advance. Only 17% of the respondents stated that they had never encountered unexpected expenses on trips. One in five respondents (21%) admitted that such expenses occur on almost every trip, and about half of the study participants noted that such situations occur from time to time.

Unplanned expenses are most often associated with the purchase of gifts and souvenirs, 41% of respondents said. Another 37% faced additional costs for food, 26% for accommodation, and 17% for mobile communications and the Internet.

Despite the prevalence of such situations, in most cases the additional costs are relatively moderate. Among those who faced unforeseen expenses, 74% spent no more than 50 thousand rubles on them. Another 18% spent an additional 50,000 to 100,000 rubles, while 7% had unplanned expenses exceeding the 100,000 mark.

Taking into account such risks, many Russians try to plan their travel budget in advance. The majority of the study participants (61%) expect to spend no more than 100,000 rubles per person on their next vacation. Another 21% are ready to allocate up to 150,000 rubles, while only 16% of respondents plan to spend more than this amount.

Why Russians choose domestic destinations and how the cost of holidays has changed

To avoid financial difficulties during the holidays, more than half of Russians (54%) form a separate reserve in case of unforeseen expenses. Another 32% invest additional funds only if there are increased risks, and 13% do not provide a financial cushion at all. Among those who create a reserve, almost half save up to 10% of the total travel budget, one in four save up to 20%, and 18% prefer to allocate a fixed amount in advance, regardless of the cost of the trip.

As for choosing a vacation destination, most Russians still prefer domestic tourism. Among those who plan a vacation, 69% consider only trips to Russia. Another 18% choose between domestic and foreign destinations, while only 13% intend to spend their holidays exclusively abroad.

The highest interest in domestic tourism was recorded among residents of the Sverdlovsk region — 76% of respondents choose Russian destinations. At the same time, Muscovites are more likely than others to think about a foreign vacation: 18% of residents of the capital consider this option.

Ilya Umansky, President of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (PCT), announced on May 27 that interest in tours in Russia for the upcoming summer season decreased by 4.8% compared to 2025. Thus, after the saturation of the market and the strengthening of the ruble, foreign destinations have become more attractive for travel. He noted that such a correction occurred after the saturation point of the market in the tourism industry. In 2024, the demand for domestic tourism increased by more than 15%, and last year ended in the range of 5%.
