- In Russia, vocal folds were restored for the first time with the help of BMCP
For the first time in Russia, an operation was performed at the Sechenov University Clinical Center to restore vocal folds using an individual biomedical cell product (BMCP). The technology is based on the use of cellular spheroids, which are created from the patient's own cells.
It is specified that the method is aimed at the regeneration of damaged laryngeal tissues. The development is intended for patients with scarring of the vocal folds. Such disorders can occur after injuries, inflammatory diseases, or surgical interventions.
The operation is performed minimally invasively through the larynx, without external incisions. During the intervention, an individual BMCP based on mesenchymal stromal cell spheroids is injected into the defect area. In the future, the damaged area is replaced by the patient's own tissue, which helps restore the natural structure of the vocal fold and its functions.
"Cellular spheroids are three—dimensional cellular structures in which cells maintain natural contacts with each other and remain viable longer after implantation. Thanks to this, they can support regeneration processes in the damaged area for a long time," said Peter Timashev, Director of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine at Sechenov University, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In addition, Mikhail Svistushkin, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Ear, Throat and Nose Diseases at the Sklifosovsky Institute of Clinical Medicine, noted that traditional surgery for cicatricial changes allows scar tissue to be removed, but not to restore its original structure. The new technique makes it possible to create conditions for the regeneration of the patient's own tissue and restore the ability of the vocal fold to vibrate normally.
According to him, the first patient has already successfully undergone surgery. Recovery is progressing well, and the first clinical results confirm the possibility of using this technology.
In December last year, for the first time in history, a catheter treatment of cardiac arrhythmias using innovative domestic equipment was performed in the Tambov region. It was carried out by the operating team of the Vishnevsky Surgery Center, which was led by the Chief surgeon and endoscopist of the Russian Ministry of Health, Director General of the Vishnevsky National Research Medical Center of Surgery, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Amiran Revishvili.
