Hungarian MPs cut their salaries and deprived themselves of financial benefits
The Hungarian parliament has decided to reduce the salaries of deputies by 40% and cancel a number of financial benefits. This was reported on June 8 by the Daily News Hungary newspaper.
"The Hungarian parliament has unanimously approved a significant reduction in the salaries of the Prime Minister, ministers and parliamentary officials," the publication says.
The bill was prepared by the faction of the ruling Tisa party and supported by the opposition. The document was adopted unanimously.
According to the decision, the salaries of deputies, which are calculated taking into account the share of GDP per capita, as well as coefficients for positions and work in parliamentary committees, are reduced by 40% from the previous level. The base rate for calculations is about €5,000.
The deputies also refused a number of compensations and benefits. In particular, payments for mobile communications and fuel have been canceled. Hotel expenses during business trips have been reduced by 31%, office rentals by 52%, and salaries of assistants by 30%.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced plans to reduce the costs of the state apparatus, including reducing the salaries of ministers and cutting the privileges of officials. According to him, the parliament's budget will also be reduced by about 25%.
The prime minister himself, according to the newspaper, will receive about € 10.5 thousand per month as head of government and deputy. At the same time, the salary of his predecessor in this post, Viktor Orban, was almost twice as high.
Dmitry Polyansky, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the OSCE, said on June 8 that Hungary had changed its position in the OSCE after the victory of the Tisa party in the parliamentary elections and the election of Peter Magyar as Prime Minister. According to the diplomat, Budapest's representatives are no longer blocking those general statements that Hungary previously did not support, including on Ukraine.
