Thieves in the USA stole almost 11 thousand bottles of bourbon for $ 500 thousand.
In Philadelphia, unknown persons tricked into stealing 10.8 thousand bottles of bourbon, the value of which is estimated at about $ 500 thousand. This was reported by The New York Times on June 7.
The semi-trailer driver arrived at the five-story brick warehouse and presented his identification card. The security staff made a copy of the document and, following the standard procedure, loaded 18 pallets of alcohol intended for commercial distribution on board. The theft was discovered after the goods did not arrive at their destinations.
"The driver did not have proof of purchase, which is an important element of the safety protocol. The warehouse contacted the shipping broker and received confirmation that the truck was indeed expected, after which the pallets were loaded and the driver released," said Rob Koh, chief operating officer of the parent company Apogee 21 Holdings.
The top manager ruled out the possibility of insider involvement in the crime and linked the incident to the activities of hackers. According to him, cybercriminals hack into the computer systems of transport companies and impersonate their representatives in order to illegally pick up cargo.
The publication notes that the stolen alcohol is likely to be sold through unauthorized channels: secondary wholesalers, online platforms or illegal distribution networks. Representatives of the company have asked distributors, restaurant and bar owners to report any suspicious offers to purchase large quantities of bourbon.
The Guardian newspaper reported on April 22 that 28-year-old Jarrell Augustin was arrested in California, who replaced expensive Lego sets with dry pasta and returned them to stores for full price. As a result, the theft prevention department noticed the opened sets without figures, which led to an investigation.
