- The head of Rosnedra pointed to the superiority of Russian oil reserves over American ones
Russia has significantly larger reserves of shale oil than the United States, but so far it is more profitable for it to extract traditional oil. This was announced on June 9 by Oleg Kazanov, head of Rosnedra.
"We certainly have the potential, and it is clearly localized. We are talking about two geological formations — the Bazhenov formation of Western Siberia and the domanic of the Ural-Volga region. For comparison, in the United States, shale oil reserves are estimated at about 11 billion tons. Our conservative estimate for Russian formations is 30 billion tons. That is, we potentially significantly exceed the United States in terms of reserves," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Kazanov explained that the situation in Russia is different from the American one. In the United States, shale oil is being developed in conditions of a shortage of alternative sources and with significant free investments. Russia has a large volume of easily produced oil with low cost, which directly competes with shale oil.
Nevertheless, work on the development of shale production is underway. 18 licenses for technological landfills have already been issued. According to Kazanov, this is a long-term investment, and in the future the development of shale oil in Russia will reach a new scale.
Alexey Govyrin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (United Russia faction), told Izvestia on June 8 that in the event of a further escalation of the conflict over Iran, oil prices would again exceed $100 per barrel. In the most negative scenario, quotes will rise up to $190. According to him, at the end of 2025, most analysts expected an oil surplus of more than 3 million barrels per day.
