The US Air Force has requested $2.2 billion to develop a new "Doomsday aircraft"
Air Force (Air Force) The United States has requested $2.2 billion to create a new "Doomsday aircraft" E-4C. This became known on June 9 from the budget documents of the department.
The requested amount for fiscal year 2027 is 23.2% higher than the funds allocated for the program this year. Expenses will increase due to the large-scale expansion of engineering work and testing, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the documents, the new aircraft will replace the E-4B, which is already becoming obsolete. Like all such devices, it will be protected from the effects of a nuclear explosion and an electromagnetic pulse. In the event of the destruction of ground headquarters as a result of a potential conflict on board such a vessel, the President of the United States, the head of the Pentagon and other key officials will be able to exercise command.
The Pentagon has signed a development contract with Sierra Nevada Corporation. The main design phase is planned until the end of 2031. Additionally, the agency plans to allocate about $3 billion for the modernization of the airbase's infrastructure and more than $5.4 billion for the purchase of finished aircraft, which will begin in 2029.
