Poland seized about a ton of heroin worth almost $60 million.
Poland has seized about a ton of heroin worth almost 220 million zlotys ($60 million) in one of the largest anti-drug operations in the country in recent years, Reuters reported on June 8, citing a statement from the authorities.
Police said in a statement that officers found drugs in containers shipped from the United Arab Emirates to the Baltic port of Gdynia. The police said they had received information about the cargo from the British tax authorities.
"I don't need to tell you what would happen if so much of this terrible drug entered the Polish market," Interior Minister Marcin Kerwinski told a news conference.
The police reported that the drugs were hidden in a batch of decorative bricks and discovered using X-ray equipment. Three Polish citizens were detained in connection with this case. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, cocaine flows to Europe have "increased dramatically" in recent years due to increased production and consumption of the banned substance.
Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper reported on February 16 that Polish law enforcement agencies are preparing for a possible increase in crime after the end of the conflict in Ukraine due to the appearance of former military personnel and illegal weapons in the country. According to him, after the end of hostilities, there may be a significant number of people with combat experience in the country, as well as modern weapons of interest to criminal gangs.
