US President Donald Trump has supported the idea of involving Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem in mediation in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on a ceasefire. This was reported on June 8 by the Israeli portal Ynet.

"The President of the United States is considering the possibility of using the Patriarch of Jerusalem of the Greek Orthodox Church as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev in negotiations on a cease—fire," the publication says.

According to the portal, both sides can trust Theophilus III due to his position in the Orthodox world and his participation in diplomatic and humanitarian initiatives. It is expected that as part of the initiative under discussion, Theophilus III may meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of June.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed on June 6 that Russia had no illusions about the ability of the United States alone and definitively to solve complex international problems, including the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

Putin added on June 4 that the conflict in Ukraine would quickly come to a natural resolution if Kiev agreed to the compromises discussed in Anchorage. According to him, Russia is ready and willing to resolve the situation by peaceful means, based on the agreements.
