Monument to Gogol by academician Merkulov unveiled in Simferopol

A monument to the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol was unveiled in the center of Simferopol at the intersection of Gogol and Pushkin streets. This was announced on June 7 by the head of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov in his Telegram channel.

According to him, the idea of installing the monument belongs to the head of the Crimean Metropolis, Metropolitan Tikhon of Simferopol and Crimea. The monument recalls the classic's visit to the city, which he paid on his way to the city of Saki for treatment.

The sculpture itself was created by master Sergey Merkulov back in 1948. For the new monument, Moscow sculptor Vitaly Shanov made a bronze pedestal depicting the characters of the writer's works. The height of the monument, together with the pedestal, is about 7.5 m, and its weight reaches 6 tons.

"I thank Vladyka Tikhon for preserving the memory of the great writer, who was not only an outstanding writer, but also a spiritual and religious philosopher," said Sergey Aksenov.

On June 5, the head of the Abzelilovsky district of Bashkiria, Airat Aminev, announced that they plan to install a six-meter replica of the Motherland monument in the village of Askarovo. The grand opening of the monument is scheduled for Russia Day, June 12.
