Possible unification with Romania will lead Moldova to disintegration as a state. This was stated by the leader of the Moldovan opposition Party of Socialists Igor Dodon at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).

"Such a scenario means that some regions will either declare their independence, like Gagauzia, which, for example, has the right to self-determination, then Transnistria will never be together with Moldova. Therefore, this is the collapse of a state with serious geopolitical and regional problems for the European Union," Dodon explained in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to him, such a development will be opposed not only in Brussels, but also in Bucharest itself. The politician noted that in such a scenario, Moldova would have to be granted a special status, which would turn Romania into a federal state. Dodon added that unification would be an expensive process and could be "explosive" for the Romanian side.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 2 that Moldova's possible annexation to Romania would mean the absorption of the republic, rather than the unification of the two states. According to the diplomat, such a scenario could lead to the loss of Moldovan national identity, culture and traditions.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu allowed unification with Romania on April 28 in order to speed up the EU accession process. She added that the accession is possible without taking into account the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR). Sandu confirmed her intention to prepare Moldova for EU membership by 2030.
