- The sappers told about clearing the way for the stormtroopers using drones in their area.
Sappers are now working in conjunction with drones, drones not only help to conduct reconnaissance, but also facilitate the clearance of dangerous areas on the front line. How unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) reduce the threat to the lives of our fighters, told Izvestia correspondent Egor Kildibekov.
The line of combat contact is a place where deadly danger awaits everywhere. The roar of artillery, explosions of tank shells, enemy "birds" in the sky. But even in complete silence, you can't relax: the area is literally littered with mines. Some are easy to distinguish against the background of asphalt or earth, some may not be noticed at all.
"Every pebble, every piece of wood has to be checked, because everything disguises itself as a tree, a stone, anything. Even a walkie—talkie can be booby-trapped," said the deputy commander of the engineering platoon of regiment 1194 of the Southern Group of Forces with the call sign Lev.
Sapper groups on foot are gradually becoming a thing of the past. There is still no way without them, the final word is always up to the person, but drones have taken over most of the work, they are both aerial reconnaissance and a remote mine clearance system.
Their work is especially important in an open area, where any equipment and even just an infantryman instantly become a target for the enemy's "birds". Properly trained and equipped winged sappers perform their work quickly, and most importantly, they allow the fighters to stay safe.
"The quadcopter, which is used to mine routes, is equipped with a special discharge system. Two munitions are installed here, which are dropped from a height of about 20 m. Everything about everything takes no more than 15 minutes, that is, a sapper can make four flights per hour," the correspondent explained.
This is, of course, ideal. In combat conditions, work still takes longer, because you can't trust technology in everything. The search for disguised mines is the work of the operator and his trained eye, and here everything is the same as for sappers on foot, only remotely.
"You walk along the same route, and you already know almost every stone. It's the same with the bird. You're flying one route — oops, there's something new, there wasn't. We need to take a look. I looked at it: if there was anything suspicious, I dropped it," added the operator of the BPS regiment 1194 of the Southern Group of Forces with the call sign Phil.
You need to look carefully. If a piece of terrain is examined in the morning, by lunchtime it can be mined by the enemy, because the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) use the same technology, but on the contrary: they drop mines from quadrocopters, and they often do not think that civilians can be blown up.
"Civilians periodically apply. For example, various anti-personnel shells and so on. We're clearing mines. There is a lot of work to be done in the future to clear it, to return to a peaceful life," said the commander of the ISR regiment 1194 of the Southern Group of Forces with the call sign Kisel.
The engineering and sapper company of the 1194 regiment is one of those units that work at the very forefront. As our stormtroopers advance in Konstantinovka, the work only increases, there is no lull even in the location of the unit. While the journalists were filming this report, it was only by a miracle that they did not get hit by an enemy kamikaze drone. This proves once again that engineers are not a logistics service at all. They often go even ahead of the stormtroopers, the way for infantry and equipment must first be cleared, because the offensive does not stop.
On May 30, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that a sapper shooter, Guard ensign Denis Tolmachev was engaged in providing Russian assault groups in the area of the special operation. During the task, Tolmachev discovered six antipersonnel mines of the Ukrainian army and destroyed them. In addition, the soldier noticed three enemy FPV drones in the air, which intended to strike at the assault groups. Tolmachev also eliminated the drones without consequences for the Russian military.
